1) Overview
TTFB Checker is a lightweight Chrome extension whose single purpose is to measure and display the Time To First Byte (TTFB) and related timing phases for the page you’re viewing. It reads high-level timing values from the browser’s Performance/Navigation Timing APIs and shows them in the badge and popup. TTFB Checker does not modify webpages and does not send any data to external servers.
2) What data we access
- Timing metrics only: numbers exposed by the browser such as
responseStart, domainLookupEnd,connectEnd, etc. - No page content: we do not read page text, forms, cookies, or DOM content.
- No identifiers or telemetry: we do not collect IPs, device IDs, account info, or analytics events.
3) Where data is stored
- Local session storage: The latest timing metrics for the active tab may be kept in
chrome.storage.sessionso the badge/popup can display results reliably during navigation. Session data is purged by Chrome when the tab is closed. - Optional preferences (future): If you enable features like custom thresholds or hidden tips, those preferences are stored locally (and only locally). If Chrome Sync is enabled on your browser profile, Chrome may sync those preferences between your own devices; they are not transmitted to us.
We do not operate servers for this extension and we do not receive your data.
4) Permissions and why we need them
host_permissions: ["<all_urls>"]– Lets the content script read the page’s Navigation Timing entries on any site (including localhost and intranets) so measurement can occur automatically on load.storage– Keeps the most recent metrics for the current tab in session storage and (optionally) saves user preferences, if you enable them.
The extension does not request access to browsing history, cookies, or clipboard, and does not inject tracking scripts.
5) What we don’t do
- No collection or sale of personal data.
- No analytics, ads, or third-party SDKs.
- No content scraping or keystroke logging.
- No transmission of timing data off your device.
6) Security
Because data remains on your device and is limited to timing numbers, exposure risk is minimal. Still, you should only install extensions you trust and keep Chrome up to date.
7) Your choices
- Disable or remove: You can disable or uninstall the extension at any time via
chrome://extensions. - Clear data: Closing the tab clears session metrics. Removing the extension deletes any local preferences.
8) Children’s privacy
TTFB Checker is for general utility and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
9) Changes to this policy
If we make material changes (e.g., adding cloud services or telemetry), we will update this page and bump the extension version. Your continued use after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
