Sitemap Viewer — Privacy Policy

Effective date: September 24, 2025

  1. Summary
Sitemap Viewer is a browser extension that helps you inspect a website’s sitemap.xml (or sitemap index) and view exported URL lists. This extension is privacy-first: it does not collect, store, or transmit personal browsing data to any third-party servers. All network requests are made directly from the user’s browser to the target website.
  2. What this extension does
When you click the Sitemap Viewer toolbar button, the extension will attempt to locate and fetch the target site’s sitemap by:
  • Checking the site’s /robots.txt for Sitemap: entries and trying those URLs, and
  • Trying common sitemap locations such as /sitemap.xml, /sitemap_index.xml, or /sitemap.xml.gz.

The extension parses the returned sitemap XML in your browser, displays URLs and optional metadata (, , ), and provides features such as search/filter, CSV export, and opening selected links in new tabs.

  1. Data collection — short answer
We do not collect personal data. Sitemap Viewer does not upload, store, or transmit your browsing history, visited URLs, or sitemap contents to any external servers.
  2. Data handling — details
  • Network requests: All requests to robots.txt and sitemap files are initiated directly from your browser to the target website host. No proxy servers or third-party services are used by default.
  • In-memory usage: Sitemap XML and parsed URL lists are kept in the extension’s runtime memory to show results in the popup. They are not persisted to disk, sent to analytics providers, or uploaded.
  • No telemetry: The extension does not include telemetry, analytics, crash reporting, or other background data collection.
  • Optional features: If you (or a future version of this extension) enable optional features that require external services (for example, a server-side decompression proxy or cloud-based processing), those features will be explicitly documented in the extension UI and will require your consent. This privacy policy will be updated to list any such services.
  1. Permissions and why they are required
  • activeTab — Used only after you click the extension icon. It allows the extension to obtain the active tab’s origin and, if necessary, run a one-time page-context fetch (via scripting.executeScript) as a fallback when direct background fetches are blocked by the target site’s CORS settings. This is used only to retrieve sitemap data you requested.
  • Host permissions (host_permissions or optional_host_permissions) — Required so the extension can fetch robots.txt and sitemap files from the host. The extension requests the minimum required host access; where possible we recommend using optional host permission patterns or requesting permissions at runtime to limit scope.
  • No other permissions are requested for data collection or telemetry.
  1. Sharing and third parties
Sitemap Viewer does not share your data with third parties. The extension will not transmit sitemap contents or browsing information to any external parties unless you explicitly enable a feature that requires it; anything that sends data externally will clearly request your permission and be documented.
  2. Data retention & deletion
  • Since the extension does not persist data to servers, there is nothing stored remotely to delete.
  • If sitemap data is saved locally by the extension in a future release (e.g., an explicit “Save project” feature), such storage will be disclosed and provide a clear deletion flow in the UI.
  • To remove any in-browser stored state (if present), uninstall the extension via Chrome’s extensions page (chrome://extensions) or use the extension’s built-in “Clear” button if available.
  1. Security
We follow standard security practices to minimize risk. The extension runs entirely in your browser and does not rely on backend servers for normal operation. If data were ever to be sent to a server as part of an optional feature, connections would use HTTPS.
  2. Children
This extension is not targeted at children. It does not knowingly collect personal information from children.
  3. Your rights (GDPR / CCPA guidance)
  • If you are in the EU (GDPR): Because the extension does not collect or store personal data, there is no personal data subject to access or deletion. If you believe the extension is collecting personal data (for example, if you enabled an optional feature that uses a remote service), contact us (see below) and we will assist with data access or deletion requests.
  • If you are in California (CCPA): The extension does not sell or share personal information. If you have a specific request about data associated with you and believe data exists, contact us.
  1. How to revoke permissions or uninstall
  • To revoke host permissions or remove the extension: go to chrome://extensions, find Sitemap Viewer, click Details, and either adjust the “Site access” settings or click Remove to uninstall entirely.
  • If the extension uses optional_host_permissions, you can revoke them via the extension’s details page or Chrome’s permissions UI.
  1. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy occasionally. When significant changes are made a revised effective date will be posted here. We recommend checking this page before enabling new optional features.
